Russian soldiers used dating apps to leak information. British spies infiltrated Russian intelligence with dating apps.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine is causing great repercussions in the world of technology. According to the latest reports, some spies in the UK are tracking Russian soldiers through dating apps. Could the UK crack down on Russian intelligence using dating apps?
The UK Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) has started using dating apps and social media platforms like the dating site Grindr to track the movements of Russian soldiers and monitor Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Spies track Russian soldiers on dating apps
Some spies in the UK claimed to have hijacked Russian President Putin's plans after reading messages posted on social media by Russian soldiers. Intelligence service MI6 said it had handed over the information it obtained from the soldiers to the Ukrainian authorities to assist in the preparations for the invasion.
Although gay dating apps like Grindr were officially banned in 2013 at Putin's behest, it continues to be used as a "popular dating service" by Russian soldiers, according to a report by the Daily Mail.
The Secret Intelligence Service also examined the messages it received from the social media platform called VKontakte. A British spy told the Daily Mail about the information they received about Russian intelligence:
“These sites were treasures for our spies, and dating apps were particularly important for us to study soldiers and those involved in military action. We learned everything down to the details of the blood supply to the Russian troops. We gathered information about Russia's plans and the imminence of the invasion."
On the other hand, Russian President Putin warned that Ukraine is in danger as a state administration. The ceasefire promise in Mariupol, Ukraine, also failed after fierce fighting.
According to information from the region, Russian troops continue to besiege the cities and the number of Ukrainian citizens forced to flee the country has increased to 1.4 million. Putin has been blaming the Ukrainian government and European countries since the beginning of the invasion.
