Apple returns Crimea to Ukraine!

Apple once again surprised Russia with its decision to Crimea. Apple Maps and Weather app connected Crimea to Ukraine.

Russia, which confronted almost the whole world after the invasion of Ukraine, is also dealing with major sanctions of technology companies. Apple, which aroused curiosity by stopping its sales in Russia, has now made an interesting decision for the Crimea region in Apple Maps.

Apple's native Maps and Weather services now show Crimea as a Ukrainian territory for users outside of Russia, according to the innovation spotted by Mashable. This peninsula, occupied by Russia since 2014, has been quietly handed over to Ukraine, at least according to Apple.

Apple reconnects Crimea to Ukraine

Crimea, which was previously occupied by Russia and stated to have been separated from Ukraine, did not appear to belong to any country in Apple's applications. However, Apple changed this decision in 2019. Users around the world, including Turkey, have been marking Crimea as a Russian territory for more than three years.

This decision taken by Apple naturally caused the anger of the Ukrainian people and Ukrainian politicians. There were harsh statements against Apple services used by thousands of people, and hashtags such as #CrimeaIsUkraine (Crimea is Ukraine) were launched on social media.

Meanwhile, Russian officials said they supported the company by interpreting Apple's decision as correcting a mistake.

But if we go back to the present, the operations carried out by Russia in the last week may result in the loss of territory for the country under Putin. Apple began to take a reverse stance on 2019 by marking Crimea as part of Ukraine.

The other sanctions that Apple has taken against Russia are also not to be underestimated. In addition to stopping sales of Apple products in Russia, it removed Russia Today and Sputnik News from all App Stores except Russia. It should also be noted that the Apple announcement announcing these sanctions does not mention the changes in Apple Maps and Weather applications.
