Making striking statements in the opening speech of Mobile World Congress 2022 (MWC 2022), FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta said that the club will launch its own NFTs and establish its own metaverse to attract new fans. In addition, this metaverse will hold more than 300 million fans online.

The Catalan club's board of directors shared last month's financial report, showing that Barcelona lost 600 million euros in the last two seasons, of which 135 million euros were due to the pandemic alone. Barcelona President Laporta also stated that he was struggling with a debt of 1.35 billion euros during his new presidency.
This entire financial crisis has led Barcelona into the world of crypto and the metaverse. Saying that they have 300 million fans worldwide, President Laporta announced that they are working on their own metaverse, including NFT and crypto, to more efficiently leverage the international market.
This could allow Barcelona to gather fans from around the world in a central online location and offer them paid services. According to Laporta, the slogan “Mes Que un Club”, which is more than a club, will become more and more meaningful.
The details of this statement, which left its mark on MWC 22, are not yet clear. President Laporta, who did not answer questions such as what will happen in the metaverse that Barcelona will establish and which companies will cooperate for the metaverse, emphasized that NFTs and crypto will play an important role in the financial situation of the club.
“There is a new business world and we need to invest heavily in digital innovation to compete in this world. We want to capitalize on our Metaverse, NFTs, and any other new business opportunities that arise in our world.”
