Russia continues to gather the reaction of the whole world after the invasion of Ukraine. In this sense, Russia has faced many sanctions from technology to automotive, from food to entertainment sector. The hate speech decision taken by Meta, formerly Facebook, was the last straw for Russia. Russia, which has decided to ban Instagram, has now given Russian users additional time to switch from the platform.
Russia gave new date for Instagram ban decision
Russia's official communications agency Roskomnadzor has revealed details for the Russian Instagram ban, in a statement released today. Accordingly, it is currently possible to enter Instagram within the borders of Russia. However, after the Meta group's decision to allow hate crimes against Putin and Russia, the platform was banned yesterday. Today, Roskomnadzor gave the date for the Instagram ban. Accordingly, Russian Instagram users will be able to transfer information on their Instagram accounts until 12 midnight on March 14.
In a statement yesterday, Instagram President Adam Mosseri criticized Russia's decision to ban Instagram. Mosseri announced that 80 percent of Russian Instagram users follow non-Russian Instagram accounts. In this sense, this decision taken by Russia means closing a window to the world for Insagram users in the country. Russia has previously banned the Facebook platform in the country. However, Russia has faced sanctions from many technology companies so far.
Russia-Ukraine war and sanctions decisions
Russia began to invade Ukrainian territory at 6 am on February 24, 2022, after a long-standing conflict with Ukraine. The whole world predicted that Russia would only enter the Donbass region, located in the Northeast of Ukraine. The operation, which started in order to protect the Donetsk People's Republic and the Lugansk People's Republic, which declared their independence in this region and recognized by Russia, later expanded to the vicinity of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.
Russia, which many countries in the world started to impose embargo, also removed from important financial systems such as the western world Swift. This banning attempt, which extends to Russian athletes, artists and even to Russian works of art, continues increasingly. Russia, on the other hand, does not withdraw from the occupied regions despite all the harsh sanctions decisions.
