Netflix, which has around 1 million subscribers in Russia, announced that it has temporarily unplugged the service in the country.
Numerous sanctions against Russia came from technology companies in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Many digital services, from PayPal to Spotify, also stood by Ukraine by supporting the restrictions. We recently shared with you that TikTok is among the services that apply restrictions. Not long after, Netflix announced that it was pulling the plug on the service for Russia.
Netflix 'temporarily' suspends all Russian operations
Some of us spend all day on Netflix. Without this life-saving service, we might never have seen great productions. It is not difficult to guess that someone who watches TV series and movies constantly can fall into a deep void when we remove Netflix from their life. Viewers in Russia will experience this from now on. We have to say that this will hurt more than the sanctions from companies like Snapchat and Twitter.
Of course, we cannot show the Russian people as responsible for the war. However, US companies think that there will be a reaction to the government as a result of the sanctions disturbing the Russian people. This may not be a definitive formula, but the United States currently has no greater leverage in the cyber world.
The Russian public, who has never fallen behind in accessing pirated movies and TV shows, will likely replace Netflix with torrenting from now on. But even the fact that Netflix Originals will no longer come with Russian dubbing would be considered a blow. When the latest reports were released, Netflix had 1 million subscribers in Russia.
Do you think the Netflix ban will make a sound in Russia?
